Why all eyes will be on the 2018 ASEAN Outlook Conference in Singapore on 17 January

On 17 January, the South-east Asia Nations (ASEAN) will convene for their annual conference. For the first time in 10 years, Singapore will Chair. This is a landmark moment for Singapore. We look at the items that will be discussed with Singapore as the chair of ASEAN.

Discussions on free trade and regional interdependence
Top of the agenda will be discussions on how ASEAN will work together better to strengthen ASEAN’s economic and financial resilience and increase cross-border trading. There will be focused efforts on  achieving a high quality Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) with ASEAN member states and with China, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan.   This will position ASEAN to the wider world as a region which enables seamless economic activity and trade facilitation and therefore an impressive region for businesses wanting to make their mark across South East Asia.

The focus on digital and ecommerce 

Ease of access to new technology is often important factor in an SMEs chances of prospering. It strengthens innovation.  Cybersecurity is increasingly front of mind for all businesses transacting online.   The summit will focus on how ASEAN will work together to promote innovation, build up digital connectivity and facilitate e-commerce flows which benefit businesses, especially micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
