Tourism is a major industry in Singapore and draws millions of tourists each year. With its cultural diversity, shopping attractions, arts and entertainment, island resorts, and an exciting nightlife, Singapore has always been a popular tourist destination. Now as indicated by recent trends, Singapore is fast emerging as one of the hottest tourist destinations in Asia.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has stated that Singapore saw the arrival of a record 8, 57,000 visitors, in February 2010. This is a 24.2 per cent increase over the number of visitors it received in February 2009, and in fact, the figure is the highest ever recorded number of visitor arrivals for the month of February.
Following the influx of tourists, hotels in Singapore also saw an increased number of visitors in February 2010. Gazetted hotel room revenue was valued at S$133 million, accounting for a rise of 5.8 per cent against last year. Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) went up by 4.9 percent points to touch 79.7 per cent. Visitors also benefited from reduced hotel rates, with Average Room Rate (ARR) coming down by 1.5 per cent to S$201. Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR) went up by 4.9 per cent to S$160. By tier, AOR of Economy tier saw the highest growth, going up by 8.4 percent, to reach 74 percent. The luxury tier witnessed the highest ARR growth, an increase of 4.6 per cent to reach S$347.
