Asian students aspiring a higher education in countries like UK, USA and Australia have now found other alternatives in Asia – a choice between Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, according to a recent New York Times article. Singapore has recognized the growing demand for higher education in Asia and has been working towards providing a platform to cater to this demand.

As more students from India, Indonesia and China are able to afford higher education overseas, they are choosing Singapore as their educational destination. Singapore has positioned itself as Asia’s education hub by keeping its educational fees affordable, providing education comparable to Western standards and offering a safe social environment to students. By choosing Singapore, foreign students from Asia are closer to their home country. Moreover, most MNCs have their regional base here and with Singapore positioned as the business and commercial capital of the region, job opportunities for graduating students are aplenty.

Taking advantage of Singapore’s position as Asia’s education hub, many of the world’s leading foreign universities – INSEAD, MIT, Stanford, IIT, Cornell (to name a few) – have either set up a physical campus or have joint collaborations/programmes with local universities here. Singapore’s education industry has not only created job opportunities for professionals in this sector, but has also benefited businesses here. Today, most businesses prefer to choose Singapore as their regional base in Asia as they can access a cosmopolitan, professionally qualified, highly educated, English speaking and technically proficient workforce.

Given the better job prospects that Asia currently offers as compared to the US and Europe, it is likely that Asian students will continue to pursue their higher studies within the region and more specifically in Singapore. This is a win-win situation for all – the students, Singapore’s education industry and the companies based in the city-state.
